As the team was preparing for their four-game series opener against the Kansas City Royals on Monday afternoon for their 1:10 pm Central Time first pitch on Memorial Day, general manager John Mozlieak and manager Mike Matheny had to make another move with their AAA affiliate Memphis.
St. Louis recalled right-handed pitcher Victor Marte up from the Triple-A's Memphis Redbirds following the demotion of Carlos Martinez, who will go back to Memphis again following his first-minor stint at the big-league level with the Cardinals.
Marte was 1-0 with a 2.78 earned-run average and 10 saves in 20 games so far this season with Memphis, who is currently 32 years old at the moment. Marte appeared in 48 appearances last season with the Cardinals and finished with a 3-2 record with an ERA of 4.91. He pitched for the Royals in both 2009 and 2010 before he was traded to the Cardinals in 2011. In his stay in the major leagues, he is 6-2 with a 7.09 ERA in 78 relief appearnces.
Martinez, who was optioned back to the Redbirds with this move, had a 4.50 ERA in seven reliefs appearances, to Memphis (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.
Welcome to an unofficial blog of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. The name is Tyler Cobb (@tcobb1990) and I'm 22 years young. Becoming a sports writer or TV/Radio broadcaster is a big dream of mine and I am using this to help me make it. Follow the blog for everything Cardinals' that you need to know. I will be writing game previews, recaps, my own team and player analysts -- and much more. Thanks and Go Cardinals!
